- This is a randomized trial to test the effectiveness of a comprehensive, behavioral-skills oriented intervention conducted in physical education class to increase overall physical activity in high school aged-girls.
- The primary outcome variables are estimated daily energy expenditure and a field measure of cardiorespiratory fitness. Cardiovascular risk factors (blood pressure, body mass index, lipoproteins) are also assessed. Two-year follow-up of intervention effects are assessed after completion of the intervention.
- The 2-semester intervention, conducted as part of PE class, includes teaching life-skills oriented physical activity and behavioral skills associated with physical activity in PE class. Support for behavior change is encouraged through a family intervention component.
