Undergraduate Program FAQ's

Q:

How many credits are required to graduate as a Community Health Specialist?

A:

The Bachelor of Science in Community Health is a 120-credit hour program. For specifics, please refer to Degree Requirements.

Q:

How do I know if courses taken at other institutions are equivalent to courses required in my program?

A:

When you apply as a transfer student to the University of Maryland you must submit all transcripts from other institutions. The University will evaluate your transfer credits and post the equivalent UM course on your UM transcript.

You can view your unofficial transcript by going to the Testudo website, then to "Records and Registration," and then to the Transfer Credit Center. You will also have to know your pin number. You will be able to determine the specific courses transferring into the University of Maryland.

If you have completed a course at another institution and it has not transferred to the University, submit a course description (e.g., course syllabus and/or catalogue description) to the Transfer Credit Center (TCC) in the Records and Registration Office (email is preferred - tccinfo@deans.umd.edu). The TCC will evaluate the course and add it to your transcript if it transfers.

If you still have questions, call the Records and Registration Office (301-314-8240) and state that you'd like to ask a transfer credit question. They are often very busy so you can also look for answers at The Transfer Credit Center website under "frequently asked questions."

Q: I understand there is an internship requirement. When will I learn about the internship?
A: HLTH 490 Principles of Community Health is taken the semester before the internship. In that course the internship is fully explained and in-class time is devoted to helping each student locate an internship that they will find enjoyable and rewarding. There is no need to be concerned about the internship until you enroll in HLTH 490.
Q: Are there any paid internships?
A: There are a limited number of paid internships which will be discussed during the semester in which you are taking HLTH 490. However, this is an excellent opportunity for experience, networking, recommendations, and even offers for employment. In fact, many of our Public and Community Health graduates are offered positions even before they graduate.
