Film Screening: Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide
Global Public Health Scholars and the School of Public Health are pleased to co-sponsor Screening and Discussion of Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. Half the Sky is a PBS documentary shot in 10 countries: Cambodia, Kenya, India, Sierra Leone, Somaliland, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Liberia and the U.S. Inspired by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn's book which was theUMD First Year Book in 2010-11, the documentary introduces women and girls who are living under some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable and fighting bravely to change them. We will show segments from the documentary, raise pertinent questions, and build interest in the Half the Sky Movement which is actively seeking students on college campuses not only raise awareness of women's issues, but to also provide concrete steps to fight these problems and empower women. The message from the Half the Sky Movement is Change is possible, and you can be part of the solution.
