Amelia M. Arria, Ph.D. is the Principal Investigator of the College Life Study. She is an epidemiologist with special research interests in understanding risk and resiliency associated with underage drinking and illicit drug use, investigating the prenatal effects of maternal drug exposure, and translating research findings for parents and families. As director of communications, Kelly leads the communications efforts to increase the visibility of the School of Public Health and to advance its reputation. She serves as the liaison to the University Marketing and Communications office and to the news media to insure that the School is recognized for its research and academic initiatives and contributions. Kelly has served in communications positions with the University of Maryland since 2005, and with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health from 2002-2005. She is an alumna of the College of Arts and Humanities (BA in English, 94) and has a Master of Arts in Publications Design from the University of Baltimore.

Erica Casper is the science writer and editor for the Maryland Center for Health Equity at the University of Marylands School of Public Health. Erica obtained a Masters degree in marine science from the Boston University Marine Program in Woods Hole, MA. She has worked for the State of Florida to improve the surface water quality in southwest Florida, and has worked at the University of South Floridas College of Marine Science to develop molecular assays for the detection of human pathogenic organisms contaminating coastal marine waters. At the Maryland Center for Health Equity she is responsible for scientific writing and editing of peer reviewed articles, creation of presentations, and preparing press releases for the center, among other things. She has a particular interest in science writing as a way to not only present research findings to the scientific community, but also to bring these findings and advancements to the greater public.

Leah B. Curran is a Research Study Coordinator in the Maryland Center for Health Equity at the University of Maryland (M-CHE). She holds a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Public Administration with specialties in Health Equity, Gender Analysis and Urban & Social Policy from The George Washington University. Dr. Currans work is rooted in critical epistemologies, and she considers how gender, race and class intersect to shape health behaviors, issues and policies. Dr. Curran has done extensive research on sex education, teen pregnancy prevention and reproductive health issues in urban and minority communities, and she has worked on policy projects funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Fannie Mae Foundation and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Her work has appeared in Brookings Institution policy briefs, government reports, white papers and academic journals.

She previously interned at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) where she did rotations in both the Department of Pharmacologic Therapies and the Homeless Prevention Branch. Laura earned her B.A. in Psychology from the University of South Florida and her Master's in Public Health from Florida International University.

As Coordinator for the Center for Health Literacy, Katherine is responsible for creating strategy and programming for Health Literacy Maryland, as well as managing the Centers communications and research efforts. She served two years in AmeriCorps, working with the Study Circles Program of the Montgomery County Public Schools, as a facilitator/program assistant, addressing racial and ethnic barriers to the achievement gap in schools. She provided support and strategies on how to engage underrepresented students and families in their diverse school communities. She is an Associate with Everyday Democracy, a national organization that uses empowerment, public dialogue, and problem solving for communities. Katherine is a 2009 alumna of the University of Maryland, with a Bachelors degree in Criminology & Criminal Justice and English.

Iris Harrigan assists the SPH Director of Research Administration with the pre-award grant application process for faculty members throughout the School of Public Health. Ms. Harrigan received her Bachelors in Business Administration from the University of the District of Columbia in 1993. She began working at the University of Maryland in 1995 with the Pre-College Programs/Upward Bound department as a program management specialist. She then moved to Facilities Management as a manager for the Capital Equipment and Document Control units. After a short break in service, Ms. Harrigan returned to UMD and spent three years with the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC), as a business manager where she managed all pre-award activities before coming to the SPH.

Dr. McCarty is responsible for managing large technology and special projects within the School of Public Health. He supports critical SPH technology infrastructure, provides consultancy for technology initiatives, and delivers trainings on topics including strategic issues related to technology and toolset usage. Domain expertise includes server, networking, database, mobile/tablet computing, cloud resources, enterprise systems, workflow engineering, and process optimization. Dr. McCarty also actively conducts research, with recent efforts focusing on enhanced adult training and workplace learning, advanced techniques to measure training outcomes, improved outcomes in organizational change projects, and patterns of successful technology deployment in enhancing business performance and achieving strategic objectives. Andrew is a double alum of UMCP, with masters and doctoral degrees from the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering and a bachelors degree in Physics from St. Marys College of Maryland.

Dr. Kim Nickerson joined the College of Health and Human Performance in August of 2006 as an Assistant Dean for Diversity. Dr Nickerson also holds a primary appointment as an Assistant Dean in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. Before joining the University of Maryland, Dr. Nickerson was Director of the American Psychological Association's Minority Fellowship Program (MFP). Dr. Nickerson has over 12 years of experience consulting with federal agencies and universities regarding diversity and increasing the presence of underrepresented ethnic minorities in science. Dr. Nickerson's research interests include the general field of health disparities and the ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of genomics - especially as they relate to ethnic minority communities. He has served (1999 - 2004) on the National Advisory Council for the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) and also as a member of the NHGRI ELSI Research Advisors Group. His research has also focused on race, ethnic, and cultural factors related to health and mental health and the use and effectiveness health and mental health services for ethnic minorities.

Susan Racine Passmore is Project Director at the Maryland Center for Health Equity at the University of Maryland (M-CHE). Her work has been in two fieldschild welfare evaluation and health disparities research reflecting a long standing engagement with vulnerable populations in the United States. In research, Dr. Passmore has explored health disparities regarding breast cancer, COPD, colorectal cancer and eye healthworking with faculty at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, School of Medicine. She has also worked to understand the needs of aging populations along the US/Mexican border in a previous position with the University of Texas at El Paso. Her knowledge of child welfare comes from eight years of evaluation research in support of U.S. Administration of Children and Families (ACF) programs. These include the Adoption Opportunities, Child Abuse and Neglect, and PSSF (Promoting Safe and Stable Families) Demonstration Grant Programs and the Early Head Start/Child Welfare Services Grants funded by the Childrens Bureau, and the ACF Healthy Marriage and Promoting Responsible Fatherhood Initiative administered by the Office of Family Assistance (OFA).

Erin Thiel is the Director of the Student Service Center in the School of Public Health. Erin earned her business degree at the University of Maryland and then went on to earn her Masters degree at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Student Affairs in Higher Education. She began her career here in the School of Public Health in 2005, where she was an advisor for undergraduate students on academic probation and coordinated recruitment, orientation and career services for students in the School. She then worked for Undergraduate Studies to develop the Pre-Transfer Advising Office. As an advisor in this office, Erin helped prospective transfer students assess their readiness to transfer to UMD, explore potential majors and estimate their time to degree completion. She most recently served as Academic Affairs Coordinator in the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. In the School, she oversaw student services for both graduate and undergraduate students which included advising, registration, class scheduling, recruitment/admissions, orientation and graduation.

Dr. Todd received her Doctor of Public Health in Community Health Sciences, Maternal and Child Health from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. She was a senior research evaluator for the Federal Government's Department of Health and Human Services for about ten years, working on issues including women's health, emergency preparedness, substance abuse, and primary care. Additionally she has experience working for state and local governments, as well as working as an advocate for health focused non-profit agencies.
