Directions for Completing the Academic Plan
- Use pencil when completing your Academic Plan. This way you can easily change your plan if you need to do so. You will receive a copy of your plan and the original stays in your file.
- Print a copy of your student audit from Degree Navigator (http://www.testudo.umd.edu/dnentry.html ).
- Print a copy of the tools that will assist you in completing your Academic Plan.

- Start with the Academic Planning sheet by checking off all AP/IB, UMD and transfer credits that fulfill either a CORE or major requirement. Also, check off any courses that you haven't transferred in yet. See an advisor to know what requirement they fill. Note that if you earned an SAT score of 600+ in Math or 670+ in English, you will waive the Fundamental Math (FM) or Fundamental English (FE) requirement. However, you do not earn credit for this. You waive the requirement, therefore having to still earn 3 credits of elective to make up for this. These credits will be identified when you complete the Total Credits Remaining Sheet.
- The Total Credits Remaining sheet will allow you to figure out exactly how many electives you have remaining. It is possible as a transfer student that you have 0 credits of elective remaining. When adding up the credits you have completed, you should only be adding courses with credits beside it . If there is an asterisk in the column, it is already counted in the major requirements of your academic planning sheet.
- Read the backside of the Academic Plan sheet first before you start writing in classes. The activities you want to pursue during and after college (graduate school, a minor, study abroad, etc.) will assist you in mapping out classes for your remaining years. You will need to incorporate the classes needed for these activities in your academic plan. Remember that any courses that don't count for CORE and aren't required by your major, will count as electives if you have electives remaining.
- Now, turn to the front side of the Academic Plan. It is time to map out (in pencil) your remaining requirements on the Academic Plan sheet. Here are a few things to remember when completing your plan:
A: FE and FM must be attempted by 30 credits and completed by 60 credits.
B: All CORE distributive studies must be completed by 60 credits.
C: Advanced Studies and Professional Writing can only be taken after 60 credits.
D: The prerequisite courses are listed on your academic planning sheet in parentheses. You must complete these courses before you can take the course listed. HLTH, KNES and PHED students must be aware that BSCI201 is only offered fall and BSCI202 is only offered spring.
E: When filling in your classes, don't put the specific classes you will take unless they are classes required for your major. This allows you the flexibility to pick any class that fits that requirement.
-Example: if you are fulfilling your HA, only write "HA" not THET110.
-Example: if you are fulfilling an activity, only write "activity", not KNES154P.
-Example: if you are fulfilling a health elective, only write "health elective" not HLTH106.
F: You may wish to use the 4-Year Template sheet that you printed as a guide.
- Finally, remember that every program equals 120 credits. This means the number of credits in your plan combined with the credits you brought in must add up to 120 credits for a single/double major or 150 for a double degree. If your grand total is not 120 or 150 credits, check your work!
Here's a hint: Remember your degree has three parts: CORE, major and electives. The Academic Planning sheet lays out the number of CORE courses and major courses you must complete. All other credits that make up your program are electives. Look to make sure that all of your CORE requirements and all of your major requirements have been accounted for in your plan. If they are, you are missing electives. Add these to your plan until you reach the required credits needed.
Once you have completed these steps, you are ready to see an advisor who can approve your plan. Remember if you are changing your major, your major will not be changed unless you have an academic plan approved by an advisor in the Student Services Center.
Good Luck!
