Scholarships In the School of Public Health

Support for Students - Scholarships
Scholarships play an important role in our attracting and enrolling the most talented students. Today, when making college decisions, students and their parents consider the availability of a high quality education and the amount of financial assistance available to them. To remain competitive with other prestigious institutions, the School of Public Health must maintain and establish new scholarships for both undergraduate and graduate students.

There are two ways to support student scholarships: (1) Make a contribution to an already existing fund; (2) Personalize your gift by creating a scholarship fund.

The existing funds within the school and its Departments that provide opportunities to support students include:

  CollegeScholarships
    Jerry P. Wrenn Scholarship Fund
Dr. Wrenn's committment to undergraduate education was evident throughout his tenure in the School of Public Health as a faculty member, student advisor, Assistant/Associate Dean of Student Services and Dean. The Student Services Center in the school was Dr. Wrenn's vision to better serve undergraduates. In celebration of his work with students, the Jerry P. Wrenn Undergraduate Scholarship was established in June 2003 to commemorate his retirement from the school. For more information about the scholarship, contact the SPH Office of the Dean.
  Center on Aging

  Department of Family Studies Scholarships

Andrew Billingsley Endowed Scholarship Fund
This scholarship honors Dr. Andrew Billingsley, former Chair and Professor of the Department of Family Studies. One of the nation’s leading scholars on African American families, Dr. Billingsley is the author of seven seminal books, including Black Families in White America and Climbing Jacob’s Ladder: The Enduring Legacy of African-American Families. Dr. Billingsley also served as President of Morgan State University, Vice President of Howard University, and Fulbright Scholar in Ghana. His scholarship is awarded to a Family Studies student interested in pursuing research on ethnic minority families.

Noel Myricks Endowed Scholarship Fund
Upon Dr. Noel Myricks’ retirement from the Family Studies faculty and appointment to Emeritus status in summer 2004, the Department established an endowed scholarship honoring this distinguished educator. An outstanding teacher and nationally recognized family scholar specializing on the intersection of families and the law, Dr. Myricks also volunteered his time to develop, direct, and coach the University’s Mock Trial team, which won five national mock trial championships in the last decade. In 2003, Dr. Myricks was awarded the Kirwan Undergraduate Education Award and the University of Maryland System Regents Award for Mentorship. This scholarship is awarded to a first-generation college student in Family Studies.

Edlavitch Family Studies Fund
Selma Tyser Edlavitch was an distinguished community volunteer whose generosity had a tremendous impact on Washington area families. A graduate of Towson State University, she was an elementary school teacher, business person, and fundraiser for numerous organizations serving children and families. Her sponsorship of the Edlavitch-Tyser Family Relations Forum of the Washington Hebrew Congregation benefited family members of every age, including young children, adolescents, single adults, married couples, and the elderly. The Edlavitch fund provides an annual scholarship to an outstanding student in Family Studies.

Jennifer Becker Carswell Award Fund
Jennifer Becker Carswell was an outstanding student in the Marriage and Family Therapy Master’s program in Family Studies, recognized by students and faculty for her superior work, engaging spirit, and dedication to serving the elderly and children. When she tragically died in 1995, her family and friends established the Jennifer Becker Carswell Award Fund. This award annually recognizes a second-year Marriage and Family Therapy student for excellence in clinical work, a unique contribution to a clinical specialization, or a demonstrated financial need.

Jeanette Spier Beavers Memorial Scholarship Fund
A dedicated therapist, political activist, and mother, Jeanette Spier Beavers cared deeply about the rights of the underprivileged and issues affecting families throughout the world. Ms. Spier was a clinical social worker whose professional work included a private couples and individuals therapy practice, adoption counseling, assisting the mentally ill, and extensive writing about families with disabled children. When she died in 1987, her sister established a memorial scholarship as a lasting tribute to her work in family therapy. This fund provides annual scholarship support for one or more graduate students enrolled in the Marriage and Family Therapy Master’s program who share her commitment to providing therapy for economically disadvantaged families.

  Department of Kinesiology Scholarships
    Alice Morgan Love Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was established to honor Dr. Alice Morgan Love, an alumnus and professor in the Department who died in the prime of her career. It is given to a woman physical education major who has the strongest academic credential for an entering freshman. It is awarded to the recipient for four years.

Louise Howarth Scholarship
This scholarship honors Louise Howarth who was a dedicated physical education teacher in the Department from 1950-68. Its purpose is to provide scholarships for academically exceptional undergraduate physical education students enrolled in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Maryland, College Park who show strong potential to be outstanding teachers. It is a one-time award.

David H. Clarke Graduate Scholarship
When Dr. David H. Clarke retired as Department Chair, his colleagues and friends initiated a graduate scholarship to honor his distinguished career as a scholar and professional. This scholarship is awarded annually to academically exceptional students applying for the doctoral degree in the Department. It is awarded to the recipient for two years.

Elaine Henson Memorial Fund
Elaine Henson was a doctoral student in the Department of Kinesiology when she tragically died in a traffic accident. As an international student from the Phillipines, this fund was established in her memory to support graduate student travel to present papers at scholarly conferences or to conduct research in another laboratory, with special consideration for those traveling internationally.

Department of Public and Community Health Scholarships
    Doris Sands Award
Dr. Doris Sands was a renowned sexuality educator who was recognized for her tremendous teaching skills and ability to reach students. The Doris Sands Excellence in Teaching award has been historically presented to recognize outstanding teaching in the school, but the Department of Public and Community Health is now working to change the award so that it might provide financial assistance to a deserving undergraduate student during his or her final year.
  Associative Groups
    Gymkana
Founded at the University of Maryland College Park campus in 1946, the troupe has traveled throughout Maryland and neighboring states promoting drug-free living. Each of its 50+ members pledge themselves to be drug-free. Through their role-modeling and unique gymnastic performances, they have influenced hundreds of thousands of people to join them in living a drug-free life.

If you wish to personalize the establishment of a scholarship award to meet your individual philanthropic objectives you may consider creating a Named Scholarship, which can be made possible through a $50,000 minimum endowment.
