In April 2024, the University of Maryland (UMD) School of Public Health (SPH) will recognize four outstanding members of the SPH community with the Distinguished Terrapin Award. As the school's highest honor, these individuals are recognized for their outstanding professional achievement, service to the school, cultivation of a culture of philanthropy and/or advancement of the Dean’s strategic priorities.

Dr. Braun, a professor emerita in the University of Maryland School of Public Health’s Department of Family Science and the first Endowed Chair and Founding Director of the Herschel S. Horowitz Center for Health Literacy, held a dual faculty appointment with the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Nine years after his journey to earn a doctoral degree began, Junaed Siddiqui crossed the stage at the Xfinity Center on May 23, 2023 to officially graduate from the School of Public Health. While the average public health doctoral student at UMD completes their Ph.D. within five years, Siddiqui is far from average.

Faculty from the School of Public Health will receive unprecedented funding to tackle some of society's biggest challenges, including a $3M grant to create an international alliance focused on alleviating food, energy and water insecurity, protecting environmental and global public health and bolstering community resilience in a changing climate.

Horowitz, a research professor with the Department of Behavioral and Community Health, is a leading advocate and researcher in dental public health and health literacy efforts.
